Mass Cytometry Workshop at the University of Rome Tor Vergata

On March 17, 2026, Dr Ania Biernacka and Dr Ines Papak from our Centre participated in the workshop “Advances and Perspectives in Single-Cell and Imaging Mass Cytometry for Biomedical Research”, held at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (UNITOV), Italy.

The event, organized by UNITOV, brought together researchers from the University of Rome Tor Vergata and Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital (IRCCS, Rome), as well as early-career scientists involved in the CANVAS Twinning project.

The workshop formed part of the training activities conducted during the Twinning visit, which took place from March 16 to 20, 2026, at the Regeneration and Stem Cell Laboratory of the Department of Biology, UNITOV.

The main objective of the workshop was to provide an overview of Imaging Mass Cytometry technologies, including their principles, applications, and increasing importance in spatial proteomics, particularly in biomedical and clinical research.

Participants were introduced to advanced approaches for high-dimensional data analysis, ranging from raw signal processing to the generation of complex cellular maps for immune profiling. The programme combined expert-led lectures with interactive sessions designed to support knowledge exchange and encourage interdisciplinary discussion.

Particular emphasis was placed on the application of mass cytometry, especially in the characterization of tumour microenvironments.

The workshop was coordinated by a scientific committee from UNITOV, composed of Prof. Carla Montesano, Dr. Marina Potestà, and Dr. Claudia Fuoco.

Participation in the event contributed to strengthening interdisciplinary competencies and fostering sustainable collaboration within the CANVAS consortium.
