The cooperation between the International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science, University of Gdańsk and the University of Malta was the main topic of the online meeting, which took place on April 20, 2021.
What cooperation is based on – interdisciplinary training and exchange under the ERASMUS program, joint development projects, joint study programs and seminars, and research collaboration – will enable scientists to deepen their research on cancer immunotherapy.
The meeting was attended by representatives of both units and Malta’s government representatives: prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Bielawski, Vice-Rector for Innovation and Liaison with Business and the Community, prof. Theodore Hupp, Director of the International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science, prof. Alfred J. Vella, Rector of the University of Malta, dr Justyne Caruana, Malta’s Ministry for Education and Owen Bonnici, Malta’s Ministry for Research, Innovation and the Co-ordination of post Covid-19 Strategy.
Prof. Ted Hupp, emphasized that he is pleased with the cooperation with Maltese experts and their significant contribution to the joint work. – The International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science is a centre of excellence focused on inter-disciplinary research. This collaboration is a key step in our common global vision to stimulate knowledge exchange and facilitate new discoveries in cancer research – said prof. Hupp.
Cancer immunotherapy is a form of cancer treatment that uses the strength of the patient’s own immune system to prevent, control, and eliminate cancers. Current efforts by the international research community indicate that immunotherapy has the potential to become a more precise, personalized, effective form of treatment with significantly fewer side effects than current chemotherapy.

The presence of the Ministry for Education, Justyna Caruana, and the Ministry for Research, Innovation and Post-Covid Strategy, Owen Bonnici, representing Malta, emphasized the importance of this cooperation for the development of Malta’s scientific excellence and the exchange of knowledge for the well-being of society.
